Places of Interest & Things To Do

Cashel Lodge Tipperary is close to the famous Rock of Cashel, the ancient seat of The High Kings and Bishops of Munster. The Rock is one of the most visited tourist attractions and educational sites in Ireland outside of Dublin. Over the centuries it has been visited by many thousands of people from all over the WORLD, and all these people listen to the spoken story and also make their own story on why THE ROCK is such a place.

Kings, Queens, Bishops and People have put their name's to documents and papers associated with Cashel over the last thousands of years, and in May 2011, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh recorded the royal visit in over one hundred years.

Come and stay at Cashel Lodge B&B Tipperary and retrace the footsteps of the millions of people who have visited Cashel and its famous landmark.
Rock of Cashel
It's huge, it's complex, it's iconic, there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world and it's right here in Cashel at the heart of Tipperary. The Rock of Cashel (Carraig Phádraig), more formally St. Patrick's Rock, it is also known as Cashel of the Kings. Reputedly the site of the conversion of Aenghus the King of Munster by St. Patrick in the 5th century AD. Long before the Norman invasion The Rock of Cashel was the seat of the High Kings of Munster, although there is little structural evidence of their time here. Most of the buildings on the current site date from the 12th and 13th centuries when the rock was gifted to the Church. The buildings represent both Hiberno-Romanseque and Germanic influences in their architecture.

To quote from the WIKI entry "The complex has a character of its own, unique and native, and is one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe."The Rock is the setting of the fictional "Sister Fidelma Mysteries" mediaeval whodunits from Peter Tremayne.

The Dominican Abbey Cashel
The Dominican Abbey Cashel, to the south-east of the Rock, was founded in 1243 by Archbishop David McKelly. It has some very fine windows that can still be seen, the carved sandstone east window is considered to be particularly beautiful.

Stay at Cashel Lodge Tipperary, visit the Dominican Abbey Cashel, and explore Cashel and the surrounding area.
Hoare Abbey
Originally founded in the mid 13th century by the Benedictine Order as St Mary's Abbey of the Rock, the beautiful ruin of Hoare Abbey is Cashel Lodge’s nearest neighbour.

Hoare Abbey has had an eventful life. Only a few years after it was founded, Archbishop David McCarvell violently suppressed the Abbey and handed it over to the Cistercian Order. They say that he had a dream that the Benedictines were about to kill him, though many people doubt the truth of this. The Archbishop was a colourful and controversial character who was frequently summoned to explain his antics to the King of England.
